Registering and paying NMIA for participation
This annual garage sale is being organized by volunteers from the North Mayfair Improvement Association. In order to be included and have your address listed on the garage sale map (both in printed and online Google Map), your check must be received or you must pay online by May 26th, 2024
If you do not wish to pay online, you can mail a check with your name, address (where sale is happening), email address, and phone number to the following address:
North Mayfair Improvement Association
P.O Box 300611
Chicago, IL 60630
You will receive a confirmation email once payment is received.
Garage Sale Permits
All paid registered participants in the garage sale will have their address included in the group permit submitted to the alderman’s office. There is no need for individual houses to submit individual permits! However, if you participate it will count against the two sales you are allowed to have each year. You can however hold a sale on Fri, Sat and Sunday May 31 - June 2 if you like.
Where should / can I hold my sale
You are free to sell items from your garage, in your backyard, front yard, inside your house. It’s up to you.
Sale advertising and promotion
Part of your cost of registering will cover paid online and print advertising to promote the sale on sites like garagesale.com. We will also post in free sites such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, community calendars, neighborhood Facebook pages, NextDoor and in the Alderman's newsletter. You can feel free to email your friends, post about the sale on your own social media pages, etc. The more houses on a given block the better for traffic on your block. We encourage you to convince your neighbors on your block or in your alley to have a sale too.
Signs
The week before the sale, several large garage sale canvas banners will be put near the main intersections into the hood (Lawrence and Elston; Pulaski and Carmen, on Foster, etc). More than 20 smaller signs will be put up all around the neighborhood on street corners to remind residents and those driving through of the upcoming sale. The committee will not be marking individual homes or alleys that are having sales. If you would like to draw attention to your specific block, alley or house, you are free to put up your own signs to point people in the right direction.
Maps and listing of participating houses
By about Monday May 27th the participating household list will be finalized. Some maps will be printed for handing out and the map will be available to participating households and will also be posted to an interactive Google Map. If you register after this date you will not be listed on the map.
We will email out a pdf version of the map that you can print out and hand at your sale. The Google Map link of all participating houses will be available on the NMIA web site a few days before the sale.
What happens if it rains?
The sale will happen rain or shine, it will not be rescheduled and there will be no refund.
Plant Swap
The plant swap will take on Argyle between Kostner and Kenneth (At the South end of Palmer Elementary) from 9 am - 3pm (or earlier if we run out of plants). We will have a table set up, all plants are free to take and drop off. Optional donations can be made to NMIA as well. Usually there are avid gardeners that can answer many questions. While you are here, you can pick up a map for the North Mayfair Community Garage Sale and join NMIA.
Contact Belinda O’Kelly with any plant swap related questions at [email protected].
